Dance Performance Trailer: Bringing Daughters of the Sea to Screen
Every land has its tale, its origin story if you will . . .
In early 2025, we were invited to produce and edit a teaser trailer for Daughters of the Sea, a new dance production by Ballet Cymru and Krystal S. Lowe, with music by Kizzy Crawford. Created to promote the upcoming performances and support ticket sales, the trailer needed to do more than document the performance, it needed to draw the audience into the rich, mythic story rooted in Welsh folklore.
Daughters of the Sea is a bold contemporary adaptation of a Welsh folktale with the same name, blending dynamic dance, multilingual spoken word, and Kizzy Crawford’s soul, funk, and jazz-inspired score. From our first conversations with Krystal, it was clear this project offered an exciting opportunity to do something a little different from our usual work.
Krystal shared a written script for the trailer along with visual references inspired by fantasy writing and dark, gothic imagery. These influences shaped both our approach to filming and the edit. In the edit we combined Kizzy’s music with subtle nature-based sound design and on the day filming day we used Lensbaby lenses to introduce softness and distortion, helping create a sense of fantasy and otherworldliness.
The trailer introduces the three daughters, each representing a different element (Earth, Wind, and Fire), alongside the pobl y môr, the people of the sea. Finding a location that could support these elemental identities was key. After some searching, Pembrey Country Park provided the perfect mix of forest, land, and coastline, allowing each character to inhabit their own world.
The teaser serves as a glimpse into the story of Daughters of the Sea, whilst leaving space for the discovery in the live performances.
